Sun N Fun 2004

There were lots of planes, but I always lean toward the old golen era ships. I saw these old monocoupe racers all in a row.
These are some really classy birds.

How's this for a fierce war bird? There was actually a double row of these bad boys, from cubs through 172's. I live for this stuff! Lots of other war birds too. Many, many Texans and Trojans, even a Corsair or two! You can probably see countless pics of these all over the net, though.

Here's a war bird shot you don't see every day. Click on it to see the full-size picture. This Texan got blown off the edge by a strong cross wind and nosed up. Nobody got hurt but the owner's accountant, but I felt so bad for the pilot. What a bummer it must have been to be on top of the world one second and get crushed by it the next. Poor bastard.

Ah well, on to cheerier thoughts. I got a couple good biplane shots out on the flightline. This is what makes the flightline pass so great. I didn't use any special lense for these shots. It was just my old Canon AE1 35mm and a 28-80mm lense. I've had this camera for over 20 years, and it still takes great pictures. More than once I've paid the bills with it. I've done product photograhy indoors and out, but I always preferred location work for outdoorsey stuff. I take pictures on digital cameras too, but for the special stuff I still use film.

Here's a couple more of the planes using the grass runway. I fly into this airport fairly often, love to do touch and go's at the world's nicest towered airport anywhere. But I can't believe the amount of traffic they have to deal with during this event. There are planes landing and taking off constantly throughout the event, as well as ultra light aircraft!.
Finally, I went by the ultralights area to see the new Light Sport Aircraft class planes. Here are a few of them. They looked pretty cool, but are kind of small. These were about the most substantial of the lot. The one on the right actually uses a Lycoming engine.

Well, that's about it for our Sun-N-Fun trip. It's in February every year, so check it out. This was the vendors area at the ultra lights section. There were tiny aircraft landing and taking off in a steady stream all day. I was impressed with how stable they were in the wind. The days this time of year are spectacular, but often come with a good, stiff wind.

Hope to see you there next year!
